Friday 11th April 2025

As we close the spring term, I reflect on a week filled with many different emotions. Sadly, we received the news of the passing of a local Headteacher, who was a colleague and a lovely person within our Rowley Regis Learning Community. I’m sure you’ll join me in sending our heartfelt condolences to her family, friends and the entire Blackheath School community.

Tragic events like this always remind us to cherish the positives in life, and I must say it has been an absolute pleasure to be Headteacher at Temple Meadow this week. We've had such wonderful events showcasing the incredible talents of our children across the school. I’m especially proud of our Pupil Parliament, who have worked hard on our school newspaper, TM Times, which I hope you’ve already received.

This morning we held our Celebration Assembly, and there was so much to celebrate!

We announced the winners in each class for our Reading, Writing, and Maths Curriculum Champions. A huge well done to all of you for your hard work and dedication this term — we are so proud of you!

It was a pleasure to welcome Claire, Annie, and Sarah, our school governors, who joined us to help present our first-ever Values Award, recognising those children who have demonstrated our core value of 'Belong'.

I was completely overwhelmed by the number of Easter Egg competition entries — your creativity was incredible! To celebrate all the wonderful entries, we’ll be posting photographs on our Facebook page soon, so keep an eye out.

We also celebrated all the children who have achieved 96% attendance or higher this term, and presented special trophies to those with the most improved attendance.

A huge congratulations to everyone — what a fantastic end to the term!

I wish you all a restful break and I look forward to welcoming you back on Monday 28th April 2025.

Year 6 SATs

As we close this term, I would like to take a moment to express our thanks to the incredible Year 6 teaching team and their children for their unwavering commitment and hard work in preparing for their upcoming SATs. The Year 6 team consistently go above and beyond, offering additional support through their after-school booster club, ensuring every child has the opportunity to reach their full potential.

I’m so proud of the dedication shown by our Year 6 children, many of whom have attended these extra sessions week after week, giving 100% effort to their learning. The final booster club session will take place on Monday 28th April, ahead of SATs week starting on Monday 12th May.

Welcome Back, Mrs Colwell!

This week, we were delighted to welcome back Mrs Colwell from her maternity leave. We’re really excited to have her return to Temple Meadow and know that she has been greatly missed.

Mrs Colwell will be teaching in Year 3 Strong throughout the summer term and we’re confident that the children will benefit from her energy, experience and commitment to their learning.

I’m sure you will all join me in giving her a very warm welcome back.

Councillor Visit

We were pleased to welcome Councillor Allcock to Temple Meadow this week, alongside representatives from Serco. This visit followed our recent letter raising concerns around issues affecting our local community. Together, we had an open and productive discussion about the experiences of our families and steps we can take to make positive changes in our area; particularly linked to dog fouling on the pavements.

Actions Already Taken:

  • Pavement stencils have been added to promote responsible pet ownership.

  • Additional signage has been placed on local bins.

Agreed Next Steps:

  • Improved bins in our local area.

  • Stickers on bins to raise awareness around proper disposal of dog mess.

  • Sandwell Council letters to go out to the community – the school will also use these to support our messaging.

  • School to continue spreading the message that dog mess can be disposed of in general waste bins.

Additional Ideas Being Explored:

  • Launching a local awareness campaign to promote responsible behaviours.

  • Improved literature to help inform residents.

  • A map of bin locations to be developed and shared with families.

  • Potential for providing free dog bags in key areas as a short-term initiative.

We are grateful to Councillor Allcock, who has offered his full support in helping drive these improvements. He shared that the biggest challenge remains changing the mindset of those who don’t currently clean up after their dogs – something we can all help to influence through consistent messaging and community effort.

Working Together for a Cleaner Future:

Councillor Allcock also spoke about a new recycling campaign that Sandwell Council is launching. Our school has been invited to get involved and help shape the messaging through pupil voice.

We also learnt about the Litter Watch charity, which offers ways for schools and families to get involved in keeping our environment clean.

Whilst with us, we also explored other issues with Councillor Allcock such as Road safety, as Councillor Allcock is the lead for Highways in Sandwell. He shared how his own experiences which inspired his career in public service.

We also heard about recent work around food waste in Sandwell, including encouraging residents to plan meals and reduce waste through smarter shopping choices. Our school’s ‘Free Fridays’ were celebrated as a great example of reducing waste and promoting sustainability.

We’d like to thank Councillor Allcock, Beckie (Serco Communications) and Sid (Environmental and Social Value Officer at Serco) for their time, ideas and support.

We’re incredibly proud of our Head Girls – Chloe, Neve, and Eleanor – for being such responsible, caring, and positive representatives of Temple Meadow. They consistently demonstrate maturity, kindness, and leadership, setting a fantastic example for all of our children. Thank you for representing our school so brilliantly – you make us proud every day!

Together, we can make a real difference to our local community.

VE Day 80th Anniversary – Plans Underway

We wanted to let you know that as a school, we are currently planning some special activities to celebrate the 80th anniversary of VE Day on Thursday 8th May 2025.

This is an important milestone in our history and a valuable opportunity for our children to learn about and reflect on the significance of Victory in Europe Day. As we remember the end of World War II in Europe, we will be helping pupils understand the importance of peace, resilience, and remembrance.

We look forward to marking this occasion with a sense of pride and respect, and we will share more details about our plans with you closer to the time.

Summer Festival

A huge thank you to Miss Pearson, Mrs Cleal, Miss Hodgetts, Mrs Whyle, Mrs Fisher, Mrs Collins and Miss Dale for attending our initial Summer Festival planning meeting. Miss Dale and I have since had the opportunity to come together and confirm a few details to help move the event planning forward.

The event will take place on Wednesday 16th July from 3:20pm to 4:45 pm. During the school day, all children will have the chance to enjoy some fun and fundraising activities.

At the after-school event, there will be free entertainment for families, including games, music, and dancing. To raise funds for HugglePets, staff will be running a variety of stalls, including:

  • Ice cream and refreshment sales

  • Penalty shoot-out

  • Bottle tombola

  • Count the sweets in the jar

  • Teddy tombola

  • Treasure hunt

  • Toy sale

If you know anyone who may be able to contribute to our raffle prizes, please do reach out to them and ask them to make contact with our School Office.

Celebrating Our Corridor Displays

I would like to take a moment to highlight the fantastic work Mrs Collins does as our Art Coordinator. She ensures that our corridor displays are regularly updated and truly showcase the wonderful outcomes from our classrooms.

There have been lots of new displays popping up across the school recently, and I just wanted to share a few of them with you. It’s a joy to see the creativity and effort from both staff and children represented in these displays; all visitors to the school are always so complimentary of our environments.

What a fantastic time we had at our Nursery Easter Stay and Play!

It was wonderful to see so many of you join us for a fun-filled session of play and craft activities. The children absolutely loved sharing their Nursery with you and getting stuck into some creative Easter fun!

It was lovely to welcome both morning and afternoon families, as well as those from our 30-hour provision.

PE Kit Changes

Following the Easter break, we kindly ask that all children come to school dressed in their PE kit on their allocated PE day.

Please do refer to my separate communication for full details on PE days and kit expectations.

Thank you for your continued support.

What a wonderful time we had on Wednesday morning at our Hub Stay and Play!

A huge thank you to all the families who joined us to take part in the Spring activities. From biscuit decorating and planting sunflowers to the much-anticipated Easter egg hunt - it was a joyful morning filled with smiles, creativity, and community spirit.

We loved seeing everyone get involved and hope you enjoyed it as much as we did!
