Phonics

At Temple Meadow Primary School, we use 'Letters and Sounds' for the teaching and learning of phonics. This is a structured programme that takes children through their phonics learning from making and hearing sounds in early years, through learning 44+ phonemes during Reception and Year 1, leading onto learning more complex spelling strategies in Year 2. Learning is divided into Phases, starting with Phases 1-2, Nursery, 2-3 in Reception, Phase 4-5 in Year 1 and Spelling in Year 2. However, it is possible that children will be working above or below these phases in each year group.

 

In addition to 'Letters and Sounds', children in Nursery and Reception will also use Jolly Phonics, a multi-sensory approach, to help them learn their early phonemes. If you wish to investigate the Jolly Phonics teaching sequence and actions for each sound, please click on the link below.

Children will learn to recognise each letter and match it to its sound, moving onto groups of two (digraphs) or three (trigraphs) of letters that say new sounds when together. They learn how to pronounce these sounds (phonemes) correctly so that they can blend (sound out) words successfully.

At the end of Year 1, all children have to undertake the Year 1 Phonics Screening. Working 1:1 with their teacher, children will read 40 words, some of which are real and some of which are pseudo (made up/'alien') words containing the 40+ phonemes they have learned during their first two years in school. The pass mark is usually around 32 and children who do not reach this standard will receive extra phonics support in Year 2 and resit the screening at the end of the following year.
